Hester's History
The Story Behind Our Values

Our Foundation
Built on Faith, Family and Hard Work
Richard McRae Hester Jr. built far more than a landscaping company.
Â
He built a reputation grounded in honesty, craftsmanship, generosity, and genuine care for others.

After serving in the United States Air Force, Rick moved to Athens to attend the University of Georgia, where he earned a degree in horticulture with a minor in entomology. It was there that he met his wife, Avis, and developed an even deeper appreciation for the natural world through his work assisting Dr. Deitz with the University's beekeeping program.

In 1982, Rick and Avis founded Hester Landscaping & Irrigation in Watkinsville, Georgia. Together, they grew the company from the ground up through hard work, strong relationships, and a commitment to doing things the right way.

Rick Didn't just maintain landscapes...
He invested in People
Relationships
Many clients became lifelong friends. Conversations often included family updates, laughter, and a bottle of honey alongside discussions about their landscape.
Rick quietly looked for opportunities to help others, especially widows and those facing difficult circumstances. His faith was not something he advertised- it was something he practiced.
Service
Young employees, neighbors, and friends learned lessons about hard work, integrity, and treating people with dignity simply by working alongside him.
Mentorship
Carrying the legacy forward
After Rick's passing in 2016, Hester Outdoor Services was founded as a continuation of the principles he lived by.

Today, under Nathan Hester's leadership, the company combines technical expertise, creative problem-solving, and long-term property care while remaining grounded in the same values that built the original business.

Many of the families who trusted Rick still trust our team today. That continued confidence is something we consider both a privilege and a responsibility.

The Foundation Remains the Same
"We are grateful for the example Rick set, proud to carry forward the work he began, and honored to continue serving our community with the same care and commitment that defined his life."
